What Language Do You Speak?

Our most recent newsletter highlighted several preliminary findings from the ML-SAAF study. Namely, ML-SAAF's researchers found that the language you speak is strongly correlated to your ethnic identity.

For example, Korean and Filipinos whose main language was English thought of themselves as American, while Korean and Filipinos whose main language was Korean or Tagalog thought of themselves as Korean or Filipino.

While these results might not surprise you, few studies have actually documented how exactly language is tied to identity for Korean and Filipino Americans. These results also have important implications for policy as multilingual programs become more popular in both government and education.
