Midwest Longitudinal Study of Asian American Families (MLSAAF) is currently seeking

motivated individuals to conduct mostly in-person and some phone-based household interviews for a federal government sponsored research study in the Chicagoland area.

 

About the Project

The School of Social Service Administration (SSA) at the University of Chicago is conducting the Midwest Longitudinal Study of Asian American Families (MLSAAF, PI: Yoonsun Choi, Ph.D.), funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), the National Institute of Health (NIH). This study is to collect survey data from a total of 1,000 Filipino American and Korean American families with adolescents in the Chicagoland area (500 families per each group and a child and his/her parent from each family, N=2,000). The survey is about culture, family and youth development. We expect 25% of interviews (or 480 individual cases) to be conducted in Korean, 75% (or 1400 interviews) in English, and less than 2% (40 cases at most) in Tagalog. The data collection began in September, 2014 and will continue through March 2015.

 

ML-SAAF is one of the rare studies about Filipino and Korean families in the Midwest. We believe that this study will greatly enhance the understanding of these understudied groups and help maximize the potential growth of adolescents.

 

About the Position

Primary duties of MLSAAF field interviewers include: recruiting eligible participants by contacting them from a sampling list provided by the Project Manager; scheduling interviews with agreed households and administering face-to-face, in-person interviews with eligible mothers and teenage children based on structured interview protocols. Interviewers' responsibilities are:

 

  • Attending 1-day training session

  • Recruiting eligible households (Filipino households with 12-17 years old children) by calling them from the sampling list and scheduling interviews with agreed participants

  • Conducting structured in-person interviews by visiting participants' home or a location preferred by participants. Phone interview is an option if participants strongly prefer. Each interview will take about 45 minutes with youth and 1 hour and a half with mothers (or a little over 2 hours if both a mother and a child are interviewed by the same interviewer)

  • Entering survey responses into the MLSAAF Web Survey module within 36 hours of interview completion.

  • Attending interviewer meetings at the University of Chicago campus twice a month.

  • Maintaining close communication with supervisors on regular basis to ensure effective communication flow

  • Keeping track of records and documenting in accordance with strict confidentiality guidelines and protocols

 

Qualifications

  • LANGUAGE: Bilinguals (Fluent in English and Tagalog) are highly preferred. English monolinguals are also encouraged to apply—English monolinguals will be mostly assigned to Filipino household interviews. We will pair-up a Tagalog speaking interviewer and an English speaking interviewer if necessary to interview multi-lingual households.

  • Must be eligible to present the proof of legal authority to work in the U.S. (e.g., U.S. citizenship, permanent resident card, or work permit).

  • Must have a valid driver's license, automobile insurance coverage, and a dependable car to travel locally to interview location.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required (Bachelor's degree preferred).

  • Familiarity and comfort using computers and accessing the internet is strongly preferred

  • Must be comfortable with "cold calling" and "talking with strangers." Although there is absolutely no selling/soliciting involved in the project, previous experience in teaching, outside sales, customer relations, field data collection, community/social work is strongly preferred.

  • Maintain a flexible schedule that will allow attendance at training and interview schedules that may include during the day, evenings and weekends. Must be able to schedule/conduct at least 2 household interviews per week.

  • Being able to work independently without frequent in-person supervision is strongly preferred.

  • A successful candidate should be dependable, highly organized and detail oriented, as well as having positive attitude and problem-solving mentality.

 

Compensations

Interviewers will work as independent contractors to the University of Chicago and get paid based on the number of interviews completed.

 

  • Parent (mom) interview: $60 per completed case

  • Youth interview: $50 per completed case

 

The rate includes recruiting, scheduling, transportation/mileage, data entry, record keeping and documenting, and other tasks required to conduct interviews and manage survey data. Please note that phone interviews have different payrates, accounting for no-traveling time.
